Information about Meghan Markle’s companion animals

I hate using the word “pet” so I always use “companion animal” instead. I think it respects the animal more. I’ll try and be as succinct as possible. Meghan Markle is said to be an animal lover. She is renowned for it apparently. When she lived in Toronto she had two rescue dogs: Guy and Bogart. At that time she had an Instagram account and they featured on her account. It’s now deleted.

When she went to the UK for her engagement to Prince Harry, Guy travelled with her. He is a beagle. Bogart, a Labrador-shepherd cross stayed in Canada with a very close friend because he was too old. I presume by “too old” they mean that they thought it would be unfair on the dog to be forced through such a dramatic change in his life at such an elderly age.

She said that she has had two dogs for quite a long time. She thought that Guy did fine in the UK when he was there with her. Hello magazine reports that the couple adopted a new puppy in August 2018. The dog is female and a labrador. Her name is Pula and she is black. That information comes from Vanity Fair.

I’m dictating this the day after the Harry and Meghan interview with Oprah Winfrey was aired on American television. Of course she is all over the news and although I’ve not seen the programme it appears that she went through a very difficult time even being suicidal at one point. They “escaped” to North America which supports the idea that she felt she couldn’t live within the confines of the Royal family. Interesting fact: Harry and Meghan got married properly 3 days before the big wedding at Windsor Castle. They were married twice. Strange? Why? What is wrong with one marriage?

I’m saying that because it’s reported on the Vanity Fair website that Meghan found her dogs very supportive through her “personal trials and tribulations”. Those dogs now are Guy and her black Labrador Pula.

It’s not surprising to learn that her dog supported her. Let’s remember that not only has she gone through a difficult time with the Royal family in Britain, moving to California and starting a new life there with Harry, she’s had to deal with Covid-19 as well. We know how difficult that can be for some people with the incessant lockdowns and dramatic alteration to one’s lifestyle. There’s been a surge in dog adoptions in Britain during this time which highlights the support that dogs can provide to people when they are going through a difficult time.

Meghan supports a London animal charity called Mayhew. Something which interests me is that Harry is on Twitter standing next to Jane Goodall, the famous conservationist, ethologist and primatologist. She is considered to be the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees and is well known for her 60 year study of the social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees. This photograph supports the idea that Harry is very interested in conservation.

In a conversation with a friend it is said that Meghan joked that Harry needed a new pint-sized little buddy other than the dogs which is why they had a second baby! They’ve agreed to have two babies only. That is the limit.
