NEWS AND COMMENT-NOGALES, ARIZONA, USA: In a testament to the wonderful olfactory senses of the domestic dog, a border control dog working out of Nogales, which is on the USA/Mexican border, has managed to sniff out enough fentanyl to kill nearly 3 million people. Surprisingly that represents only 12 pounds of the stuff as 2 milligrams of this synthetic, mind-altering drug can be lethal.
The tweet below tells the story. Note: this is an image of the tweet not the actual tweet because Twitter tends to leaving a link back to Twitter in its place. I don’t like that.

The US border control officers discovered three packages of fentanyl at the Arizona checkpoint. A US border patrol agent, John R Modlin tweeted about the incident.
The Mexican driver of the vehicle containing the drugs faces criminal charges! I should think so with such a lethal stash of illegal drugs.
The scene of the discovery was attended by The Drug Enforcement Administration of Phoenix and the Mexican resident who now faces criminal charges.
The tweet shows the border control officer involved in the incident.
The USA is going through what might be described as an epidemic of misuse of mind-altering drugs in that for the first time more than 100,000 Americans have died of drug overdoses in a 12-month period. About two-thirds of the deaths were linked to fentanyl and other synthetic drugs.
These drugs can be up to 100 times more potent than morphine, prescription opioids or heroin according to news media reports.
