FDA says some dog foods might cause heart disease

The FDA has isolated 16 brands of dog food (listed below) which are linked with heart disease, specifically dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in cats and dogs.

Certain dog foods can cause heart disease it is believed. Photo in public domain.

In descending order of most incidents of heart disease, the brands are Acana, Zignature, Taste of the Wild, 4Health, Earthborn Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Nature’s Domain, Fromm, Merrick, California Natural, Natural Balance, Orijen, Nature’s Variety, NutriSource, Nutro and Rachael Ray Nutrish.

It is thought that grain-free dog foods are causing the alleged problem. A potential reason for the rise in reported cases of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs is a greater awareness among pet owners. The disease can lead to heart failure and often affects large breeds.
