When you see this video, it is not hard to believe that humans are the cruellest species on the planet. You might think that domestic cats are cruel when they play with play but that is not cruelty. It takes knowledge of ethically standards and to violate those standards for an action to be deemed cruel. Cruelty only exists really in the human world and we are past masters at it especially when it comes to the treatment of animals.
What can you say? Horrible. Sick. And it’s human behaviour. I don’t really need to add words. The visuals scream at me: Humans are cruel to animals far too often.
Notice the laughing emoji embedded into the video. Someone finds it amusing. More sickness. The ignorance of some people knows no bounds.
And this is in Asia again. The lands of animal cruelty it seems to me. Different culture. Do we, in the West, have to respect a different culture even when it is cruel to animals?
Although, one website, sentientmedia.org states that Asian countries are not the cruellest animals by a long shot. They state that Australia and Belarus are the worst countries for animal cruelty! Australia is chosen partly because it slaughters nearly 3 times the global average of land animals per person per year.
Well, I tend to agree about Australia. The mass slaughter of kangaroos comes to mind and feral cats. A pretty brutal society in terms of their relationship with animals but they are very into speciesism as the drool over their native species and do all they can to protect them except curb their own excesses in destroying habitat to develop land!
RELATED: Australia’s coalmining is probably more damaging to their native species than feral cats
And in Belarus there are no meaningful legislative protections for farmed animals.
Asia is famous for eating dogs and cats. That is what puts them on the map regarding cruelty to animals. To that you’ve got to add the fur trade business. Both of these are very cruel. Shockingly cruel and I would tend to disagree with the social media website’s assessment for that reason.
At the top of the list in terms of animal protection through legislation, the UK, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland lead the way.
The website omits to mention that China has almost no animal welfare legislation. I can’t rely on this website but it is at least worth referring to. They do, after all, kill millions of dogs and cats annually and without protections under legislation to do it in a humane way.
Interestingly, this website states that the top two countries for animal welfare are India and Tanzania. They chose India because the country only slaughters two land-based animals per person per year compared to the global average of over 10.
You can see that their criteria is about livestock, farmed animals and how they are slaughtered. But there are other criteria surely? It isn’t just about farmed animals.
They did not rate any of the countries as very good with the top grade of A, which does not surprise me but I don’t want to be too cynical.
Those jailed for animal cruelty are also victims? Critical race theory and the carceral state!
