We need a proper test for consciousness in animals because we know that they can be more intelligent than we imagined but don’t yet know for sure whether they enjoy consciousness which I interpret as meaning that they understand that they exist and can observe their behavior and thoughts objectively as a third person. Perhaps they have a hybrid form of consciousness.
