To be perfectly honest, I have no idea what’s going on. Except that we see a large crowd of people in, I am told, the Kukke Subramanya temple in Karnataka, India. It looks as if they are throwing rice at the elephant. They are having fun and laughing and so on. I did some research to try and find out what’s happening but the Internet didn’t help me which is unusual. This might not be a widely observed celebration but it does appear to be a celebration of some sort. Please leave a comment to clarify what’s going on.
Obviously, it’s not fun for the elephant. It’s probably distressing for the elephant. They appear to have no sensitivity towards the elephant’s emotions.
Animal advocates on Twitter such as the Centre for Research on Animal Rights and the City’s for Elephants & Rhinos say this is unacceptable. They would argue that it is another example of elephant abuse in India.

It is some sort of December 24 celebration perhaps linked to Christmas but I’m not sure whether the crowd of people are Christians.
Perhaps it doesn’t matter. All we know and we need to know is that they are being at least mildly abusive towards an elephant to entertain themselves.
