TikTok is becoming known for videos of both Chinese men and women preparing and eating the kind of colourful food that they like. It is a trend and a popular one. I think that the citizens of the West find these videos fascinating. The kind of food that Chinese eat often looks disgusting. No criticism is meant because this is a cultural difference.
And in this video, we have a pretty Chinese woman who puts on her make up in front of a vast plate of food containing huge grubs one of which is inserted in the food and wriggling. She eats the entire plate which makes me sick thinking about it.

Please remember that this video is embedded into this website and if it is deleted at source meaning on TikTok it will not work here. I can’t control that I am afraid.
And at the end she eats a massive wriggling grub, the larva of an insect. I don’t know which species of insect this grub is related to but it must be a very big insect perhaps a beetle. All I know is that it is disgusting.
No doubt the grub is highly nutritious but to eat it when it’s living and moving is beyond my abilities to even watch never mind do it.
The cultural differences between the Chinese and the Europeans is vast in respect of the kind of food that they find acceptable. Perhaps Europeans are just squeamish. We know that food based upon insects is very nutritious.
You can buy cat and dog food made from insects nowadays. Lots of protein. In another video a pretty Chinese woman eats a giant salamander which she has cooked for the camera. That is even more disgusting. The salamander species that she cooks is endangered as I understand it. There is a real reason other than squeamishness to dislike the video.
The great contemporary artists, Ai Weiwei, explains why Chinese people can eat these kind of foods. He says that compassion is often not a word in the Chinese lexicon and that animals need to be functional and utilitarian.
The ancient attitude is that they need to serve people. That’s why they are able to kill domestic cats and dogs in the south of the country. Once an animal has ended its usefulness in working for people at the end of his life, it should be eaten. This may have been borne out of hunger in ancient times. I am speculating.
