NEWS and OPINION-STOCKPORT, UK: Police have launched a hate crime investigation after a pig’s head was found on the roof of a mosque in Stockport. On a personal level I would also simply like to mention one thing in addition to what the news media are mentioning about it being a hate crime, which it certainly looks like. This is also a form of animal abuse. It is horrendous to see a pig’s head hawked around like this to make a statement against a religion. This further devalues farm animals.
Factory farming is bad enough with the lives of pigs often being utterly miserable with no chance to express their natural motivations. But then to decapitate the animal and place its head on top of a mosque is shocking to me.
The worshippers at this mosque have been left frightened after they discovered the head on the roof around 9:15 PM last Friday.
They were gathering at Heaton’s Muslims Community Trust building on Battersea Road in Heaton Mersey, Stockport. There is a mosque and community facilities at this location.
The head was placed on a flat part of a low roof with the objective, it seems, of making it easily visible.
Under Islamic dietary rules, Muslims aren’t allowed to eat or handle pork.
Muhammad Tayyab Mohiuddin told Sky News: “Parents are worried to send their kids, especially if someone is targeting the mosque”.
He added: “We have spoken to the police and have been told it is logged as a hate crime.”
He said that security cameras showed a car pulling up outside the facility and a passenger getting out carrying what seem to be a bin bag. They then placed ahead on the roof of the mosque.
The security footage has been handed over to Greater Manchester Police.
Muhammad Tayyab Mohiuddin also said that this sort of behaviour is not a one-off occurrence.
Muslim Census and MEND reported that almost 42% of mosques or Islamic institutions under the survey had experienced religiously motivated attacks over the past three years.
Of those 42%, 17% reported physical abuse directed at staff or worshippers including the stabbing of a Muslim who gives the call to prayer and 2020.
