Neglected and starving female husky eats companion dog

NEWS AND COMMENT: This is one of those animal horror stories and it is entirely the making of one person, a 31-year-old woman living in South Australia who was incapable of caring for her dogs. It is reported that the woman, who is not named, went away for two weeks without providing any alternative means of care for her two dogs. She claims that she had gone away for a few days and had left food and water. However, the RSPCA inspector was unable to find any food bowls or water at the residence.

The inspector found a male, deceased husky dog in the backyard and its emaciated body had been partly eaten by his female companion, a Siberian Husky.

There is a video on the Daily Mail website (see below), the caption of which says that there is a woman crying in the background as the RSPCA investigator calms down the surviving dog to enable them to coax her into a carrier be taken to rescue centre.

The surviving dog’s name is Stormy and after three weeks in RSPCA care she has regained 76% of her body weight and has now been rehomed. She had partially eaten her male companion who was a 10-month-old husky with the name Demon. They lived in Christie Downs, South Australia. The event occurred in September 2019 and it has only now been reported as far as I can tell.

The woman has been successfully convicted after being charged with two counts of ill-treatment of an animal and two counts of abandonment. On conviction she was handed down a suspended 14-week jail sentence, ordered to pay veterinary, prosecution and court costs (AU$1141), banned from owning animals for life and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond.

The magistrate who handed down the sentence, Teresa Anderson, remarked that the condition of the dogs was shocking and that the defendant shouldn’t be in charge of animals.

Comment: it isn’t the first time that we have read reports of companion animals being abandoned in this way. Just recently there was the instance of an involuntary abandonment of several cats when their owner died without being discovered for several months. The two surviving cats ate the deceased cats.
