Jake, a lurcher once dubbed “Britain’s most unwanted dog,” has finally found a forever home after spending over 1,700 days at Dogs Trust Leeds. He first arrived at the shelter in 2015, at just one year old, and had been passed around several homes before that. Despite the charity receiving thousands of applications for other dogs, Jake was overlooked due to his specific rehoming requirements and lack of confidence around dogs and people.
The staff at Dogs Trust Leeds dedicated many hours to working with Jake, creating a bespoke training program to build his trust and develop his social skills. Unique techniques were used, including taking Jake for weekends away to engage in activities like hiking, which helped him gain confidence in new environments2.
A video of Jake enjoying a hike in Wensleydale caught the attention of a couple, Veronica and Keith, who felt a connection with him and reached out to Dogs Trust. After a series of visits and overnight stays to build a relationship with Jake, he was finally rehomed with them in February 2024. He has since settled well into his new home, and his training and confidence have improved significantly.
Great praise to Veronica and Keith for providing a loving home to Jake. They call him ‘Jakey’. I love that. There is plenty of love coming to Jakey. I can tell.
