This cute dog has inherited the inability to bark. It is not a medical condition to the best of my knowledge. The dog is not unwell. It is just that it is an inherited defect from the dog’s perspective but it might be a distinct positive from the human’s perspective. A lot of people would like their dog to bark less often. It actually begs the question why dog breeders are not doing more to selectively breed dogs who don’t bark. Perhaps they consider it cruel and it may be true. Perhaps dogs need to hear their own voice to feel complete and normal. Although this little dog appears to be very content. His name is Marley and he is a Silky Terrier. His silent howling is amusing and very cute.

Normally when dogs can’t bark it is due to a range of medical conditions which I’m not going to list here because I’m not a veterinarian. And some dog breeds are relatively quiet such as the Newfoundland, the Bullmastiff and the Basjeni. The last dog in this list is called the “barkless dog”. The dog produces a quiet sound which has been described as a cross between a yodel and a chortle.
