OP-ED: Well, this is about the animal-human relationship which is the core substance of this website because climate change is devastating to the survival of millions of species and it is destroying the planet essentially or will do in the long term unless humankind can get off their bums and does something about it.
So here we have a speech delivered by Greta Thunberg, the world’s representative of demonstrators against politicians who don’t do enough to curb climate change. She is called upon to deliver speeches often as you might imagine.
But, in this instance, a man manages to get onto the stage to try and grab the microphone from her because he’s upset that Thunberg is making a political statement rather than focusing entirely on climate change and the demonstration.
We don’t see in the video what Greta Thunberg was talking about before the man grabbed the microphone.
The Daily Express says that she was engaged in an “anti-Israel rant”. Thunberg never rants about anything. She is quintessentially sensible and balanced. So that statement is a bit of the news media click bait nonsense.
Also, I can’t see the connection between Israel and climate change particularly. And I can’t see the connection between the war between Hamas and Israel and climate change. So, I don’t see any reason why Greta Thunberg should be discussing Israel in the first place.
However, apparently, the demonstrators were chanting: “No climate justice on occupied land”. There is a reference there to the Israel-Hamas war. So perhaps Thunberg was referring to the war in her speech but I would doubt it. If she was, it was an unwise choice for obvious reasons.
Nobody wants to get involved in a slanging match about the rights and wrongs of Israel’s behaviour in responding to the Hamas atrocities in killing 1400 Jews. There are people on both sides but interestingly the vast majority of protests support Palestinians and their ostensible oppression by Israelis.
I won’t get into that debate. I understand Israel’s response and I also understand why some Palestinians might be angry at their relationship with Israel.
The video is interesting for me because I am a great admirer of Greta Thunberg. And you can see that she dealt very admirably with the protester who wrestled with her to grab the microphone. The problem was managed sensibly and amicably as it should because all of them are on the same side. There’s no point in fighting between themselves as it would undermine their objective.
