Badgers become grave robbers

Ann Mathers, 88, lives in a terraced house in Dudley, West Midlands, UK. She was scared to death and feared that there had been a murder when a human skull and bones started to appear in her garden. She called the police. She found several femurs and jawbones scattered in her flowerbed outside her terraced house. She began finding the bones last year.

The police arrived and sealed of her home as a potential crime scene. They then discovered that a colony of badgers had dragged the remains of humans from a nearby cemetery into her garden. They were getting into the graveyard at a neighbouring church from a public footpath which runs between the cemetery and her home.

Lorraine Lloyd, 60, Mathers’ daughter said: “The badgers are tunnelling under the graves and when they come across one which has collapsed, they drag the bones out and dump them in mum’s garden. They are basically fly-tipping human remains all over my mum’s lawn and there’s nothing we can do about it. I was on holiday when my mum called me in hysterics saying she had found a human skull in the bushes. I didn’t know what on earth was going on but when I went over there, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were human remains everywhere.”

They’ve asked the council to help and they say that they can relocate the badgers when the breeding season is over. A Dudley cabinet member for highways, Shaz Saleem said: “As badgers are a protected species, we are in the process of obtaining the services of a qualified ecologist to help.”

A councillor for the Woodsetton Ward said: “I work as a paramedic so I’m not easily shocked, but the sight of so many human remains within the public right of way and in people’s back gardens stopped me in my tracks.”
